2021 • Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) REVAMP - Resource Value Mapping
REVAMP is an open-access decision-support tool for estimating the resource recovery potential from organic waste streams such as sewage sludge, faecal sludge, and organic solid waste. The tool evaluates recovery scenarios for products like biogas, compost, and black soldier fly larvae while quantifying energy, nutrient content, and potential revenue. REVAMP supports city planners, policymakers, and other stakeholders in exploring resource recovery opportunities and circular economy applications in urban contexts, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

What is this tool intended for?
REVAMP enables rapid assessments of resource recovery options, helping stakeholders evaluate the potential for energy, nutrients, and financial benefits derived from organic waste streams. It aims to bridge knowledge gaps in circular economy planning for urban waste management.
How does this tool work?
The online, Excel-based tool uses a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) approach. It allows users to input data on waste stream volumes, waste quality, and market prices to calculate resource recovery potential and financial outputs. Four tabs guide data entry and analysis: Waste Streams, Waste Quality, Treatment Processes, and Prices. Results are displayed visually through charts and tables.
Who might use this tool and with which types of stakeholders?
The tool targets city planners, policymakers, engineers, developers, and researchers involved in urban waste management and circular economy planning. Stakeholders include water and waste companies, civil society organizations, and municipal authorities.
What stages of a process can this tool support?
REVAMP supports planning, decision-making, scenario development, and monitoring stages in sanitation and waste management projects.
What skills, capabilities, and resources are required to use this tool?
Basic technical skills and familiarity with Excel are required. Access to municipal waste data and internet connectivity is necessary for using the tool.
Where can this tool be used?
REVAMP is suitable for urban settings in low- and middle-income countries. It has been piloted in Uganda, Colombia, and Tanzania, with potential applications globally.
Case examples of where this tool has been used
REVAMP has been applied in several urban settings to assess resource recovery potential and support circular economy planning. In Kampala, Uganda, the tool was used to analyze biogas and composting scenarios, helping stakeholders evaluate the feasibility of different waste-to-resource pathways. In Chía, Colombia, REVAMP facilitated stakeholder collaboration for waste management planning, providing insights into how organic waste streams could be better utilized. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the tool was employed to explore various urban waste recovery scenarios, supporting decision-making on sustainable waste management strategies.
